Port Macquarie
Located approximately 600 Km South of Brisbane and 400 Km North of
Sydney. Boarded by the Pacific Ocean and the Hastings River. Port
Macquarie has six beautiful beaches to walk, sunbake, swim or surf. Go
fishing on the break wall and watch the dolphins swimming or the
occasional turtle. Or maybe go for one of the many cruises down the
river or out in the open waters to fish or watch the whales and
dolphins. A scenic flight on the sea plane is also worthwhile because
you get a birds eye view of the town, the beaches and surrounds. Taking
photographs from the plane give you shots that you would not normally
be able to get. What about a camel ride along Lighthouse Beach?
Port Macquarie started life as a Penal Colony in 1821. It was used
because ships could be moored in the bay, there was fresh water and
good farming land. The Penal Colony started with 60 convicts, clearing
the land and farming. Port Macquarie was the first place sugar cane was
grown in Australia and a sugar mill was established in 1824.
Port Macquarie was opened up to free settlers in 1830 and ceased as a
penal colony in the early 1840s. The weather is comfortable even in
winter with average temperatures ranging from 20 deg C - 32 deg C in
Summer, and from 8 deg C - 21 deg C in Winter and it is the sort of
place that people come to visit and never leave. There is a large
variety of accommodation in Port Macquarie ranging from the budget
conscience to those who want full luxury.
